Thomas George, 18, is accused of stabbing his mother, Catherine George, in the neck, hand and leg at their apartment in Salem just before 8 a.m. Thursday, then hitting her in the head with a hammer. He fled, and she called 911. She was taken to a Boston hospital, said Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten.
A hunt for George focused on nearby Derry, where police say he abandoned a car he had been driving. Police said they believe George stole a Chevy Blazer and drove back to the apartment, where he was arrested. Schools in Derry and Salem were on lockdown while the search was underway.
Thomas George was arraigned Thursday and charged with two counts of first-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He was held on $250,000 cash bail.
A former nurse, Catherine George admitted earlier this year to giving her brother-in-law a lethal dose of insulin in October 2012. Her brother-in-law was terminally ill, and she told police she didn't want him to suffer. Related articles:
